Alt Text 3D oblique map of Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. A parking lot and complex of structures are at the base of the mountain, which is carved with four faces. The surrounding terrain is carpeted in evergreens. Extended Description The carved faces of Mount Rushmore are just to our right of center at the top of this map. To the left of the grouping, George Washington's profile is the most clearly lit in this view. Thomas Jefferson is next, then Theodore Roosevelt's face is tucked deep into a crevice next to Abraham Lincoln to the right. This description will start briefly with the roads before moving on to describe the visitor center buildings leading up to Mount Rushmore. Roads slice through the forest to meet a parking lot near the lower left corner of the map. The colonnaded Park Entrance stretches along one long side of the oval drive surrounding the parking lot. Audio tours and restrooms are to the left just beyond the entrance, and an information center is to the right. A wide walkway connects this to the amphitheater at the base of Mount Rushmore. Two buildings cross this walkway about halfway up its length, like a lowercase t. To our left is the gift shop, and to the right is a cafe and ice cream. The walkway beyond, labeled Avenue of Flags, leads to the Grand View Terrace. Two arrows point to Visitor Center Entrances on either end of a row of columns under an entablature, like open doorways. The entrances open onto the back of the amphitheater, where rows of seating face the stage. The presidents would look directly over anyone in the amphitheater. Marked with a dashed yellow line, the Presidential Trail makes a loop from the Visitor Center up to and across the base of the mountain. One arm at the top left of the trail leads to an area with text reading, “Youth Exploration Area and Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota Heritage Village.” Four sections of stairs along the right edge of the loop are highlighted as the Presidential Trail leads to the Sculptor's Studio. The next leg, which has two sections with stairs, leads to the Borglum View Terrace and then back to the Grand View Terrace. The Nature Trail branches off from the Borglum View Terrace and leads down to the parking lot.
