Alt Text 3D map of Whitman Mission National Historic Site in Washington. Sites dot roads and trails rendered in a landscape scattered with trees. Extended Description Oriented with north to the lower left, the map shows the historic site stretching across the bottom with the upper half fading into a pale green landscape. Arcing up from the lower right perimeter, a gray road is labeled with a downward facing arrow and text that reads, “To US Route 12 and Walla Walla.” It curves left in front of a visitor center with restrooms before looping around past a picnic area shrouded with trees. Extending from both sides of the visitor center, a yellow dashed line shows a self-guiding trail that circles around the site. Stretching to the upper left, it leads to a copse of trees with a white dot labeled, “Great Grave.” From here, the trail bows up to an obelisk marked, “Whitman Memorial,” before meandering back past a cut through for Great Grave and returning to the right side of the visitor center. At this point, the trail extends to the right where it loops through a handful of sites shown as grids of varying size. Beginning at the bottom and navigating counterclockwise around the trail, these sites are labeled as follows: Mission House, Orchard, First House, Grist Mill, Emigrant House, and Blacksmith Shop. Between the Emigrant House and Grist mill, the restored millpond is shown in slate blue beside a thread of Old oxbow channel that snakes toward the upper right where the Walla Walla River is hidden beneath dense tree cover. A path marked in brown shows a spur of the Oregon Trail running from the bottom edge of the map alongside the gray road, then continuing up through the center of the map. It curves to the right just beyond the Whitman site, then veers slightly to the left near the Walla Walla River as it passes a cluster of brown tipis labeled, “Pášapuu (Cayuse) encampment (in 1847).” Legend To the upper right, a scale measures distances of 100 meters and 100 feet with text that reads, “Scale varies in this perspective view. Approximate scale at visitor center.” Below, a key shows a yellow dashed line for Self-guiding trail and an icon for Restrooms.
