Alt Text Map of Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in North Carolina. Buildings are rendered in perspective across a mottled green ground. Extended Description Little River Road winds across the bottom right corner of the map, leading to a “To hikers’ parking lot” off the right edge and “To Flat Rock and Interstate 26” off the bottom edge. A secondary entry point, the historic entrance, is just to the right which does not allow motorized access. The main parking lot is directly off Little River Road, with a note reading, “If you are unable to walk the steep trail to the Sandburg Home, call for assistance.” Next to this note is a wheelchair icon. A purple dashed line leads in S curves up to the Sandburg Home and Visitor Center, passing a structure with Restrooms, a Dam on Front Lake, Amphitheater, Front Pasture, Margaret’s Garden, and Gazebo on its way. Text along the purple dashed line reads, “Main trail to Sandburg Home, Distance: 0.3 miles (0.5 kilometers), Elevation gain: 100 feet (30 km),” and, in red text, “Steep trail.” Text on the lake reads, “No swimming, fishing, or boating.” A trail winds from near the dam to the left side of the lake and then up past woods to arrive at the back of the Sandburg Home. Text here reads, “Trail from Main parking lot to Sandburg Home, 0.5 miles, 0.8 km” and, in red, “Steep trail.” The Sandburg Home is the largest structure on the property and a Goat or Donkey House sits off the front left corner. Pathways lead back to a Rock Outcrop, Bird Feeding Area, Garage, Chicken House, Swedish House, Restrooms, Tenant House, Pumphouse, Spring House, Wood Shed, Greenhouse, Vegetable Garden, and Goat Sheds. Another trail branches off the right side of the main path and accesses the Ice House Site, Farm Manager’s House, Buck House, Wood Shed, Cow Shed, Storage Shed, Horse Barn, Milkhouse, Goat Barn, Buck Kid Quarters, Corn Crib, Barn Garage, and Isolation Quarters. Trails leading from near the structures travel to the left to include the following: Trail around Little Glassy Mountain, 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers), Trail over Little Glassy Mountain, 0.4 miles (0.6 kilometers), Memminger Path to Glassy Mountain, 1.2 miles (1.9 kilometers), and Spring Trail to trout pond, 0.1 miles (0.2 kilometers). A compass in the lower right corner of the map shows north angled down to the right at about five o’clock. Text here reads, “This birds-eye view looks southwest. Scale varies.”
