Alt Text Map of John Muir’s Travels, which span much of North America. His route is indicated with solid and dashed lines representing travel by foot, train, and boat. Extended Description The North America continent is fog gray with the coastlines shaded darker gray. Muir began in Indianapolis and traveled by rail to Jefferson, Kentucky. Solid lines connecting Jefferson, Savannah, Fernandina, and Cedar Keys are labeled “Muir’s 1,000 mile walk.” The walk was followed by a boat journey across the Gulf of Mexico to Havana and then up to New York, sailing up the coast in the Atlantic Ocean. From there he went to the southernmost point of the trip in Panama. His final leg was up the west coast by boat to San Francisco. Sites near this terminus include Muir Woods, Yosemite, Sequoia/Kings Canyon, Grand Canyon, and Petrified Forest. Mount Rainier and Glacier Bay are also labeled far to the north on the west coast.
