Alt Text Bird’s-eye view looking across White Sands National Park in New Mexico. The park is outlined in green with the surrounding area in beige with sand dunes in white. An inset diagram to the right maps sites along Dunes Drive. Extended Description This description will start with the main park map and its legend and then describe the inset diagram and its legend. Park Map White Sands National Park is a flat, shallowly cupped area bordered across the top of the map by the San Andres Mountains. The wide edge of the crescent-shaped Alkali Flat faces the San Andres Mountains and the left half overlaps the park area. A blue arrow labeled "Water/Agua” points down from the mountains toward the park. Smaller blue arrows come down the mountains like rivulets and also point toward the park. The park is cut in half across the middle by the Cooperative Use Area Boundary. The far half of the park is labeled Zone of Cooperative Use, which is a restricted area that requires permits to enter. Lake Lucero is along the upper left edge of the park, which lies in the Zone of Cooperative Use. A gray arrow labeled “Wind/Viento” points from the lake, across the Cooperative Use Area Boundary line, and at the other half of the park. The closer half of the park is open to visitors. US Route 70 clips the closest corner of the park and then acts as that boundary. A few sites are clustered near the entrance to the park, including the Visitor Center/Centro de visitantes, which has a picnic area and restrooms; Entrance Station/Taquilla de entrada; and Border Patrol Checkpoint/Garita de Revisión de la Patrulla Fronteriza on US Route 70. A road indicated in yellow winds into the white sands, passing the Dune Life Nature Trail at 1.0 mile (1.6 kilometers), Playa Trail at 1,200 feet (365 meters), and Interdune Boardwalk at 2,000 feet (600 meters), all of which are self-guided trails. The yellow road continues past a Backcountry Camping Area/Sitos remotos para acampar at 2.20 miles (3.5 kilometers), which has a hiking trail and campground; a Group Use Area/Zona para grupos (reservations required/se requiere reservación); and a picnic area, restrooms, and amphitheater on a loop at the end of the path. The Alkali Flat Trail, which is at 5 miles (8 kilometers), loops off the end of the yellow road. The park is surrounded by White Sands Missile Range Boundary/Limite de zona military, and Holloman Air Force Base borders the park at the bottom-right of the map. Park Map Legend A compass in the bottom left corner of the map shows north facing right. Next to the arrow are five symbols that represent Picnic area/Área de picnic, Self-guiding trail/Sendero autoguiado, Hiking trail/Sendero, Restrooms/Servicios sanitarios, and Primitive camping/Sitios remotos para acampar. Inset Map: Dunes Drive The inset map shows a detailed view of Dunes Drive, the yellow road that leads into White Sands. Blue distance markers extend from various points off the road and indicate that the road stretches 8 miles in total off US Route 70. This section of the description will start at the bottom and move up, following the order of distance markers along the road’s length. The Visitor Center/Centro de visitantes, which has a picnic area and restrooms, is near the intersection of Dunes Drive with US Route 70. The Entrance Station/Taquilla de entrada just above this is marked as 0.0 miles (0.0 kilometers). Between this and the next distance marker at 2.3 miles (3.7 kilometers) are the self-guided Playa Trail/Sendero Playa and, at mile marker 2.3, the self-guided Dune Life Nature Trail/Sendero autoguiado Dune Life, and restrooms. The next distance marker is 4.7 miles (7.6 kilometers). Leading to this marker are the Interdune Boardwalk/Sendero tablado elevado, which has a self-guided trail, wheelchair access, and restrooms; the End of Pavement/Fin del pavimento; and, at the marker itself, Sunset Stroll Meeting Area/Zona de reunión para el Sunset Stroll. The next section reaches to 6.0 miles (9.7 kilometers) and the rest of the sites, which are the most closely clustered along Dunes Drive, are between this and the final distance marker at 8.0 miles (12.8 kilometers). The drive creates a loop at the start of this final section. Moving up the left side are a restroom; Backcountry Camping Loop trail/Sendero de sitios remotos para acampar, which has a self-guiding trail and campground; Yucca Picnic Area/Área de picnic Yuca, which also has restrooms; Horse Area/Área de caballo; West Filming Area, which requires a reservation; more restrooms; and the Alkali Flat Trail/Sendero Alkali Flat, which has a hiking trail. Now traveling down the right side are Area 19, which requires a reservation; restrooms; Amphitheater/Anfiteatro, which requires a reservation; Roadrunner Picnic Area/Área de picnic Roadrunner, which also has restrooms; Primrose Picnic Area/Área de picnic Primrose, which also has restrooms; another site on the road with restrooms; and a Group Use Area, reservations required/Zona para grupos requiere reservaciones. A legend at the bottom of this inset map shows brown areas as Parking Areas/Estacionamiento along Dune Drive and a white circle as Special Use Reservation Required/Areas cerradas Requiere reservaciones. A compass shows north angled to the right at an approximate 45º angle.
