Alt Text Map of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Idaho. The map shows the Snake River, Oregon Trail, Goodale’s Cutoff, and Craters of the Moon within Shoshone Bannock territory in the mid-1800s. Extended Description The state of Idaho is shown as an outline. Shoshone Bannock territory, shaded yellow, covers most of the state’s bottom half, except for a small triangular sliver in the southwest corner. The Snake River, represented by a blue line, forms part of the state’s western border, swinging down across the state’s southern area and heading out the state’s eastern border. The Oregon Trail is represented by a black line that emerges from the bottom right corner of the state, curving up toward the Snake River. The trail follows around the river’s bottom curve, then crosses the river and heads northwest off the west edge of the state, just above the river. Goodale’s Cutoff, shown as a red line, starts from the Oregon Trail’s first close contact with the Snake River and heads west, merging with the Oregon Trail briefly before continuing north and out the state’s west border. Craters of the Moon is shown as a bumpy green triangular shape near the middle of the state’s bottom area, butting up to Goodale’s Cutoff, with its bottom tip almost reaching the Snake River.
