Alt Text Park map of Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, showing the bays, inlets, islands, and landmarks in and around Boston Harbor. Indicated in brown, the harbor curves like a C from the top left corner to the bottom right of the map. Two dozen islands scattered throughout the harbor are green and the water is blue. Extended Description This description will begin at the top center of the map and work counter-clockwise around mainland Massachusetts. The islands and waterways will follow before transcribing the legend at the top of the map. Mainland Rivers and beaches cut deeply into the land surrounding the harbor. At the top center of the map, Winthrop, East Boston, Charlestown, Boston, and Logan International Airport are on neighboring peninsulas. The Charlestown Navy Yard USS Constitution is on the southeast edge of Charlestown, which is across the Charles River from Boston. Some subway stations, roads, and sites are marked in Boston. At the heart of that city and moving clockwise from noon are the Boston National Historical Park Visitor Center, New England Aquarium, Long Wharf North, Boston Harbor Islands Welcome Center, and Institute of Contemporary Art. Boston Children’s Museum brings us to six o’clock. Sites up the left side of the clock face include Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Boston Common, and Boston African American National Historic Site Visitor Center. Boston, South Boston, and Logan International Airport are separated by inlets off Boston Inner Harbor. Fort Independence is at the tip of Castle Island on an eastern-reaching arm of South Boston. Ferry or tour boat departures are located at Long Wharf North, Fan Pier, and Seaport District EDIC Pier at locations around Boston Inner Harbor, and at Fallon State Pier on Old Harbor south of South Boston. Information is also available at Long Wharf North. Highways connect Boston with South Boston, Dorchester, Squantum, Wollaston, Quincy, and Milton down the left side of the map. Adams National Historical Park is just east of Quincy. Moving farther east are Houghs Neck, Weymouth, Hingham, and Cohasset in the lower right corner. Nantasket Beach stretches almost straight up into the harbor from Cohasset and connects the town of Hull to the rest of the mainland. Fort Revere, the US Coast Guard Station, and Pemberton Point, which has a ferry or tour boat departure, are in Hull. Off the northern tip of Weymouth, Webb Memorial State Park has parking, restrooms, picnic areas, and a hiking trailhead. To the southeast, World’s End, with a ranger station, restrooms, and a hiking trailhead, is bordered by Hingham Bay and Weir River between Hingham and Cohasset. A peninsula called Deer Island juts off the southern tip of Winthrop, at the top center of the map. Deer Island has parking, restrooms, and hiking trailhead. Islands Eight islands make a band across the center of the harbor. Old Harbor and Dorchester Bay surround Thompson Island, which is about halfway between the peninsulas of South Boston and Squantum. Restrooms, picnic areas, and hiking trailheads are available on Thompson Island, as well as the Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center. Moving east, next is Spectacle Island with a Visitor Center, information, restrooms, picnic area, hiking trailhead, marina, food, and swimming. Long Island has the Long Island Head Light, Fort Strong, and a public mooring. South of that, the smaller Rainsford Island has a public mooring. To the east of these, Gallops Island, Lovells Island, and Georges Island make a triangle separated by The Narrows and the Black Rock Channel. Gallops and Georges islands have marinas. Georges Island also has information, restrooms, picnic areas, hiking trailhead, and food. Lovell’s Island has a ranger station, restrooms, picnic area, hiking trailhead, campground, and unsupervised swimming, and it is also the site of Fort Standish. Farther east, a cluster of small islands near Hypocrite Channel includes Green, Little Calf, Calf, Outer Brewster, Middle Brewster, Great Brewster, and Little Brewster islands. Boston Light lighthouse is on Little Brewster Island near Shag Rocks. Graves Light at The Graves is farther out to sea northeast of this cluster. The rest of the islands are tucked among Quincy, Hingham, and Hull bays along the southern half of the harbor. From northwest to southeast, these include Hangman Island, the larger Peddocks Island with campgrounds, ranger station, restrooms, picnic area, and hiking trailhead, as well as Fort Andrews. Next are Nut, Raccoon, Grape, Sheep, Bumpkin, Langlee, Ragged, Sarah, and Button islands. Both Grape and Bumpkin islands have ranger stations, restrooms, picnic areas, hiking trailhead, and campgrounds. Legend At the top of the legend, text reads, “Note: Do not use this map for navigation.” A scale measuring 1 and 2 kilometers and 1 and 2 miles stretches over the key. They key includes symbols for the following: * Green island-like shapes for Boston Harbor Islands area, * Ferry or tour boat departure, * Public dock on islands, * Public mooring near islands, * Selected subway stations, * Subway routes, * Information, * Ranger stations, * Parking, * Restrooms, * Picnic areas, * Hiking trails, * Campgrounds, * Mainland public boat launches, * Lifeguarded swimming areas, * Unsupervised swimming, * Island marina, and * Refreshments.
