Alt Text Map of Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. The park is shown in green, surrounding areas in beige, trails in black dashed lines, and roads as red lines. Extended Description The park boundary makes a right angle with a long vertical side to the west and a shorter horizontal side to the south. The park then curves up the east side like a belly and then ends with an arm off the northwest corner. The Cañon de Los Frijoles (Frijoles Canyon) runs near the upper edge of the belly from about halfway up the east side up to and along the arm. State Route 4 creates the northern edge of the park for most of its width. The Park Entrance Station is on the east edge. From there park roads lead to Juniper Campground at an elevation of 6,600 feet (2,012 meters) or the Visitor Center in the canyon. The location of the Alcove House is marked with a purple square south of the Juniper Campground. The Burnt Mesa and Brunt Mesa Trail are to the north between State Route 4 and Frijoles Canyon. Other canyons and trails curve down and to the right. The Frijoles Rim Trail follows the rim of the Frijoles Canyon. In the northwest corner before the arm begins its reach are Alamo Canyon, Upper Alamo Trail, Horse Mesa Trail, Capulin Canyon, Upper Capulin Trail, Boundary Peak Trail, and Turkey Spring Trail. Farther out in the belly are the Mid-Alamo Trail in Bandelier Wilderness, Burro Trail, Lummis Canon, Tierra Media Trail, Hondo Trail, Hondo Canyon, Lower Capulin Trail, and Medio Canyon. Yapashi near the Hondo Trail and Painted Cave near the lower portion of the Lower Capulin Trail are labeled with purple boxes and purple text. Back along the northern boundary of the park, State Route 501, also labeled West Jemez Road, intersects with State Route 4 where the arm begins to extend off the northwest corner. There is a gate near the intersection and text reading “access may be restricted.” This entrance leads to Ponderosa Group Campground, which is at 7,580 feet (2,310 meters) and reservations are required. The Ponderosa Trail connects the campground with the Frijoles Trail at Upper Crossing at an elevation of 7,020 feet (2,140 meters). The Apache Spring trail continues parallel to the southern border of the arm, which curls up at the end. In a triangular area at the top of the arm are the Upper Frijoles Canyon Overlook Trail, Cerro Grande Route, Sawyer Mesa Trail, Alamo Boundary Trail, and two white rectangles marked Private. The Jemez Mountains cut across the Apache Spring Trail and the narrow section of the arm. The park is surrounded by Valles Caldera National Preserve to the northwest, Santa Fe National Forest above and below the arm, and Department of Energy Los Alamos National Laboratory to the north. East of the laboratory is the Tsankawi Section Bandelier National Monument, which is shown in green around a site labeled Tsankawi in purple. Below and east of this park is San Ildefonso Pueblo, shown in pale pink and White Rock shown in ivory-white below. The Caja del Rio Plateau runs alongside White Rock Canyon and the Rio Grande up the east side of the park in Santa National Forest. South of the park the Pueblo de Cochiti is also shown in pale pink. Dome Wilderness partially lines the long, vertical, west edge of the park. Legend A scale in the bottom right corner of the map measures distances of 1 kilometer and 1 mile. A legend to the right reads as follows: Red line for Paved Roads, Gray line for Four-Wheel-Drive Road, Black dashed line for Trail, Thick green line paired with a thin green line for Bandelier National Monument boundary, and Light green for Bandelier Wilderness and Dome Wilderness Areas. Below the legend are three symbols representing Parking, Campground, and Restrooms.
