Alt Text Tour map of Manzanar National Historic Site in California. Thirty-six blocks of buildings are separated into ten sections, which are all surrounded by a barbed wire fence and Guard Towers along each long side and at each corner. Extended Description Nine of the ten units are made up of four numbered blocks, all of which are separated by roads. Those nine units make a grid of three by three, which are separated by travelways and community areas. The tenth unit has two numbered blocks and sits off to one side at the lower right. The blocks are numbered from bottom to top and left to right. Almost all the buildings are outlined to represent the historic locations. A dark red line representing the main driving route runs outside or through the blocks in counterclockwise order from the lower left corner of the map. This description will move unit by unit to list the numbered blocks and marked sites in each. This will begin in the bottom left and progress up the left column, up the center column, and up the right column to follow the numbering system of the blocks. Then the path of the drive will be described. Left Column The units start with block numbers 1, 2, 7, and 8 in the left bottom square. The Historic Entrance is under the bottom left unit, and it leads to Sentry Posts, an Outdoor exhibit, Traffic Circle, Administration Area, two Japanese gardens, Staff Housing, and Warehouses. A high school is in block 7. The Visitor Center, which has information, restrooms, and wheelchair access, is next to block 7, in the pathway between it and block 13. In the middle left square are more warehouses and a Japanese garden. A Camouflage Net Factory with outdoor exhibits and a Root Cellar are to the left of this area. The Judo Dojo with an outdoor exhibit is to the right of block 10 and Kendo Dojo is above it. The South Gate leads through the barbed wire fence near block 4. In the top left in and around blocks 5, 6, 11, and 12 are Garages, Guayule Lath House, and a Japanese garden. A chicken ranch is outside the fence near the top left corner of the complex, and the West Gate is above block 12. Center Column Back down to the bottom center unit with blocks 13, 14, 19, and 20. Block 13 has the Fire Station and Buddhist Church. Block 14 has a Mess Hall, Women’s Latrine, and Barracks with wheelchair access and an outdoor exhibit. A label above this unit reads “detail at right.” A Baseball Field, which has an outdoor exhibit, is to the right of block 19 and an Outdoor Theater is above block 20. The center unit has blocks 15, 16, 21, and 22. There are two Japanese gardens and the Protestant Church in block 15, an outdoor exhibit between blocks 15 and 16, and an Elementary School in block 16. Another Japanese garden and outdoor exhibit are in block 22. The top center unit has blocks 17 with a Japanese garden, 18, 23, and 24. The Children’s Village and Orchards, both with outdoor exhibits, are in the pathway between this unit and its neighbor at the right top. The Fire Station and four structures in block 14 are filled in with brown, indicating that a structure stands there today. Right Column The bottom right unit has blocks 25, which has a Catholic Church, 26, 30, and 31. There is an outdoor exhibit next to block 30. The middle right unit has blocks 27, 28, 32, and 33, which has a Japanese garden. North Park/Shepherd Ranch with an outdoor exhibit is to the right of blocks 32 and 33. Merritt Park, which also has an outdoor exhibit and Japanese garden, is north of block 33 and the North Gate is to the right. The top right unit has blocks 29 and 34, which has a Japanese garden and outdoor exhibits. Above blocks 29 and 34 are a Hospital, Japanese garden, and outdoor exhibit. Other Areas A Cemetery and Monument, which has an outdoor exhibit, parking, and restrooms, is just outside the barbed wire fence roughly across from the hospital. Blocks 35 and 36 are in the lower right corner. The Boundary Road runs along the top and right sides of the complex. A Military Police Compound is at the bottom left, outside the Administration Area, and a road running below the complex has dead ends at each side. Main Driving Route There is a parking lot where the one-way driving tour begins just under the Visitor Center. The tour goes up along block 13 and turns right. It continues to block 31 and turns left and turns left again after block 34. It passes under the hospital and turns right and then left to access the Cemetery and Monument. It continues past the West Gate to turn left between blocks 12 and 6. The road goes on to turn right between blocks 3 and 4 and then left in front of the Camouflage Net Factory. Turning left near the Administration Area brings drivers to an access point near Sentry Posts and the Historic Entrance. The circuit closes back near the visitor center. Legend A compass in the top left corner of the map shows North angled to the right and slightly down. A scale nearby measures distances of 200 meters and 500 feet. The legend reads as follows: Dark red line for Main driving route, Faint beige line for Boundary road, Gray line for Historic road grid, Gray outline for Building no longer present or present as foundation, And brown for Building and/exhibit. The legend continues with symbols representing Information, Parking, Restrooms, Outdoor exhibit, Japanese garden, and Wheelchair-accessible.
