Alt Text Map of Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior in Michigan. The terrain of the long, thin island is shown in shades of green and the surrounding water in blue. Extended Description The island angles from the lower left corner to the upper right corner of the map, and there are visitor centers at either end. Greenstone Ridge divides the island like a backbone across its length. Hiking trails span the length of the island and much of the coastline areas. This description will begin in the southwest corner and work along the coastline north of the ridge before continuing from the northeast corner and working along the southern coastline on the other side of Greenstone Ridge. The description will end with an inset area map in the top left corner and a full transcription of the legend. Northern Coastline At southwest end of the island, the Windigo Visitor Center has a ranger station, marina, store, self-guiding trail, meals and lodging, showers, overnight dock, and campsite. One of two ferry routes, Sea Hunter, travels through the Washington Harbor to access the visitor center. Text near the red dotted line representing the Sea Hunter route reads “Grand Portage, MN to Windigo, 1.5 hours one-way, 22 miles (35 kilometers).” The second ferry route, Voyageur II, is represented as a blue dotted line, which encircles the island in a clockwise direction. Text with this line reads, “Grand Portage, MN to Windigo 2 hours one-way.” The Rock of Ages Lighthouse is just offshore to the west. Near the western edge of Isle Royale are Johns Island, Washington Island, and Grace Island, which has a campsite and overnight dock. The small Beaver Island within Washington Harbor has a campsite and overnight dock. Traveling eastward along the northern coast are Huginnin Cove, which has a campsite; Wendigo Mines; Sugar Mountain at an elevation of 1,362 feet (415 meters); Mount Desor at 1,394 feet (425 meters); Lake Desor, with two campsites; Ishpeming Point, which has a lookout tower at 1,365 feet (416 meters); Little Todd Harbor with a campsite; Hatchet Lake, with a campsite; Pittsburg and Isle Royale Mine; and Todd Harbor, which has a campsite and overnight dock. These include Mount Siskiwit at 1,205 feet (367 meters); Chickenbone Lake with a campsite; Pine Mountain at 927 feet (283 meters); Minong Mine; McCargoe Cove, with a campsite and overnight dock; Sargent Lake; Birch Island, with an overnight dock and campsite; another campsite between Pickerel Cove and Robinson Bay; Amygdaloid, which has a ranger station and day-use only dock, on Amygdaloid Island; Crystal Cove; Belle Isle, with an overnight dock and campsite; a standalone campground at an unlabeled cove; a campsite and overnight dock on Duncan Bay; Lookout Louise; and an overnight dock and campsite near Locke Point, which is near the eastern tip of the island.
