Alt Text Map of Hovenweep National Monument in Utah. National Park forests are shown in green on this topographical map, surrounding terrain in beige, and Indian reservations in brown. Extended Description Hovenweep National Monument is just below center of the map close to Utah’s border with Colorado, which takes up the right half of this map. Four Corners is marked at the intersection of these states with Arizona to the west and New Mexico to the east, both of which are mere slivers across the bottom edge of the map. Just across the state line with Utah, the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument in Colorado is shown in orange, flaring out like flames from the straight line of the Colorado border. Natural Bridges National Monument, Manti-Lasal National Forest, and Canyonlands National Park are in the top left corner of the map. San Juan National Forest fills the top right quadrant of the map in Colorado, and Mesa Verde National Park is just to the south. The Navajo Indian Reservation in Utah and the Ute Mountain and Southern Ute Indian Reservations create a solid band across the bottom quarter of the map. A network of roads indicated in red stretch sparsely across the map. US Route 191 runs roughly north-south through Utah, about halfway across the state in this view. State Route 491 branches from Monticello, near Manti-Lasal National Forest, to travel southeast to Cortez, which is in the triangle made by the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, San Juan National Forest, and Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. US Route 160 travels east from Cortez. Gray roads representing State Routes and Local Roads weave around and between these highways. One of those gray roads is State Route 261 near the left border of the map. A note there reads, “Steep unpaved road drops 1,100 ft in 3 miles; RVs not recommended.” Rivers also running like veins across the map include the San Juan, Mancos, and Dolores rivers. Off of the Dolores is the McPhee Reservoir in the east. Legend A scale in the top right corner of the map measures 5 and 10 kilometers and 5 and 10 meters.
