Alt Text Map of Horseshoe Bend National Military Park in Alabama. The park, shown in green, is mostly square but with a stepped border cutting into the square in the lower right corner. The Tallapoosa River curves through the park with a hairpin bend in the southwest corner. Extended Description The map includes points of interest in addition to showing the positions of opposing forces in the 1814 Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Indicated in red, State Route 49 curves through the northwest corner of the park with text at the south end reading “To Dadeville, 12 miles (19 kilometers),” and text at the north end reading “To New Site, 5 miles (8 kilometers).” A spur where Route 49 crosses the Tallapoosa River leads to a picnic area and a boat launch ramp at the water’s edge. A park road, also red, branches off of Route 49 in the northwest quadrant of the park. It runs south roughly parallel to Route 49 before snaking slightly eastward and ending in a loop following the contours of the river’s bend. Five numbered sites are on the park road. Stop 1 is between areas marked in gray for Jackson’s Force: Tennessee Militia/39th U.S. Infantry to the east and Bean’s Militia across a leg of the river to the west. Stop 2 is near a site named Monument and Artillery. The road then crosses a jagged purple line here labeled Red Stick Battle Line Log Barricade. Stop 3 is on the southeast side of the loop at the Tohopeka Village Site. Stop 4 is northeast on the road, not far from the Nature Trail that creates a circuit between Route 49 and the park road and Stop 5 is just northeast of that. The Natural Trail also passes an Overlook near the visitor center off the park road. Three rows of gray dashed lines separate Jackson’s Force from Monument and Artillery. Three dashed lines separate Bean’s Militia from the river, and a long row of dashed gray lines curving outside the southern bank of the river is labeled Coffee’s Force: Tennessee Militia/Cherokee and Creek Allies. A gray arrow in the lower left corner is labeled “Coffee’s Approach” and another in the top left corner is labeled “Jackson’s Approach.” The Newyaucau Village Site is in the northeast quadrant Legend A scale in the lower right corner of the map measures distances of 0.1 and 0.5 kilometers and 0.1 and 0.5 miles. The legend is divided into two sections. The first is titled “Battle of Horseshoe Bend, March 27, 1814,” and reads as follows: Thick dashed gray line for historic battle position for Jackson’s army, and Zigzagging purple line for historic battle position for Red Stick Creeks. The second section of the legend is titled Touring the Park Today and has symbols for the following: Tour stops, Picnic area, Boat launch ramp, and Nature trail.
