Las Vegas bearpoppy (Arctomecon californica), Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, 2015.
Even though 'californica' is in its name, the Las Vegas bearpoppy isn't actually found in California. It prefers the harshest, driest soils of the Mojave Desert where few other plants survive. This photo of the rare, critically-endangered Las Vegas bearpopopy was taken during the Tule Springs Fossil Beds NM spring cleanup in April.
