Adobe Brick (WHMI 117)
A brick made of dried mud with uneven edges rounded with wear
All of the original buildings at Waiilatpu, expect for one, were constructed from adobe bricks. Marcus Whitman would have made the bricks by mixing soil with grass or straw to form a stiff mud-like consistency. This mixture was then shaped into rectangular bricks and left out in the sun to dry out. The Thomas Garth archaeological excavations of the 1940s uncovered this brick at the location of the mission’s first house.
