During the time of whaling, people purchased products that were hand-made, one at a time, not mass produced.  Join New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park on Saturdays during the summer for its Maritime Crafts series. Each week, artisans demonstrate 19th century crafts and chat with visitors about them. The free series take place on Saturdays from 10 am-2 pm, beginning July 15 and continuing each week through August 26.   The events take place in New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park’s garden, 33 William Street, downtown New Bedford.  In addition, Ruth and Abby, the park’s 1850s ladies, will offer a related craft for children.  On Saturday, July 29, the Gateway Woodturners Club will demonstrate woodturning.

The Gateway Woodturners Club is one of  just six wood turning chapters in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They will demonstrate four types of wood turning: salad bowls, natural edge bowls, small lidded boxes, and magic wands. There will also be an antique treadle lathe on display.

New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park was established by Congress in 1996 to help preserve and interpret America’s nineteenth century whaling industry. The park, which encompasses a 13-block National Historic Landmark District, is the only National Park Service area addressing the history of the whaling industry and its influence on the economic, social, and environmental history of the United States. The National Park visitor center is located at 33 William Street in downtown New Bedford. It is open seven days a week, from 9 AM-5 PM, and offers information, exhibits, and a free orientation movie every hour on the hour from 10 AM-4 PM. The visitor center is wheelchair-accessible, and is free of charge.
