Join New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park on Saturdays during the summer for its Maritime Crafts series. Each week, artisans demonstrate 19th century crafts and chat with visitors about them. The free series take place on Saturdays from 10 am-2 pm, beginning July 15 and continuing each week through August 26. Most events take place in New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park’s garden, 33 William Street, downtown New Bedford. Two of the events will take place on Johnny Cake Hill, adjacent to the New Bedford Whaling Museum. In addition, Ruth and Abby, the park’s 1850s ladies, will offer a related craft for children.The series is scheduled as follows: July 15: Liz Cottrell- caning – Johnny Cake Hill July 22: Linda Rhynard- tapestry weaving - Johnny Cake Hill July 29: Gateway Turner Club – wood turning August 5: Dean Rantz - blacksmith August 12: Barbara Merry - rope making August 19: Ron Raiselis - cooper (barrel maker) August 26: Bill Feeney - scrimshaw - Johnny Cake Hill New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park was established by Congress in 1996 to help preserve and interpret America’s nineteenth century whaling industry. The park, which encompasses a 13-block National Historic Landmark District, is the only National Park Service area addressing the history of the whaling industry and its influence on the economic, social, and environmental history of the United States. The National Park visitor center is located at 33 William Street in downtown New Bedford. It is open seven days a week, from 9 AM-5 PM, and offers information, exhibits, and a free orientation movie every hour on the hour from 10 AM-4 PM. The visitor center is wheelchair-accessible, and is free of charge.
