The National Park Service, through the National NAGPRA Program, provides guidance for complying with the law and regulations. On behalf of the Secretary of the Interior, the National NAGPRA Program receives compliance documents including inventories, summaries, Federal Register notices, and newspaper notices. Selected data is available for the following compliance documents:

Inventories

For holdings or collections subject to NAGPRA, inventories of human remains must be submitted by museums and Federal agencies. This table is an abstract of NAGPRA inventories showing the minimum number of individuals (MNI) and the number of associated funerary objects (AFO) that have not completed the NAGPRA process (i.e. still pending consultation and/or public notice prior to repatriation).

Summaries

For holdings or collections subject to NAGPRA, summaries of cultural items must be submitted by museums and Federal agencies. This table is an abstract of NAGPRA summaries showing the museum or Federal agency submitting the summary and the name each Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian organization that should have received a copy of the summary.

Notices in the Federal Register

For holdings or collections subject to NAGPRA, a Federal Register notice is published when a museum or Federal agency determines the appropriate person or group to repatriate the cultural items. This table shows the museum or Federal agency submitting the notice, the publication date of the notice, a link to the published notice, and the total number of cultural items identified in the notice.

Notices in Newspapers

On Federal lands after November 16, 1990, a newspaper notice is published when a Federal agency has identified the appropriate person or group with priority for disposition of the cultural items. This table shows the Federal agency publishing the notice, the state of the Federal agency, and the publication and publication date of the notice.
