Daguerreotype
Original daguerreotype of Dr. John McLoughlin, the first Chief Factor of Fort Vancouver. Attributed to either D.H. Hendee or Joseph Buchtel, and taken in Oregon Territory after McLoughlin had left his position with the Hudson's Bay Company. For fur trade officers, the Chief Factor was the head of one of the posts. Since Fort Vancouver was the headquarters and supply depot for his department, McLoughlin was not only the administrative head of Fort Vancouver, but also the administrative head of the entire Columbia Department (a region from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Northwest coast, and from Russian Alaska to Mexican California). The daguerreotype is in a folding, embossed leather-covered case with two hinge latches, and is trimmed with a gilded border. The inside of the front cover is lined with green velvet.
