This extremely rare first edition of Baron von Steuben's drill manual was adopted in 1779. It was reprinted in revised editions for training the U. S. Army until the War of 1812. It carries the following inscription on the inside cover hand, "July the 28. 1779 (/) Capt. John Alexander" and on the back cover, "Capt. John Alexander's Book /Westpoint /July 24 1779"
