This dress was worn by Chief Whitebird’s wife after his band escaped to Canada following the events of the battle at Bear Paw. Reportedly it was given to her by Sitting Bull’s people when they arrived at Fort Walsh in Alberta, Canada. By the mid-to-late 19th century, beadwork had replaced quill work. This two-skinned dress has a beaded yoke with notched sleeves.
On loan to Big Hole National Battlefield from the US Military Academy Museum, West Point, New York.
