1940s

Many internees participated in religious activities and worship. The Catholic St. Francis Xavier mission and the Protestant Manzanar Christian Church first assembled in spring, 1942. Eventually, two Buddhist churches would be active as well. War Relocation Authority efforts to discourage certain sects of Buddhism as “too-Japanese” backfired, as attendance averaged 2,000 people a week.
