Rocking Chair
c 1850
Made in America

Rocker with caned seat and back, rockers attached at side of legs.

Mary Lincoln rested in this rocker.  She also knitted stockings in the chair as it had no arms to interfere with the needles. The curved back and low seat added to her comfort.

Footstool
c 1850
Made in America

Oval caned top stool with turned legs.

Since it was improper for a lady to show her shoes or ankles in public, Mary may have perched her feet on this footstool to keep from rocking too vigorously. Her sons probably also used it to help them reach a high shelf or wash up at the tall washstand.
