Jonathan Bradley Morse
ca. 1880

This painting depicts the birthplace of Lewis Miller, Mina Miller Edison's father. Miller was an inventor and co-founder of the Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York.

Morse was a minister who graduated from the Auburn Theological Seminary. When his health failed, doctors recommended painting outdoors to restore his vitality. Morse may have crossed paths with Lewis Miller during his ministry work, as Miller was also very active in the religious community.
