Charles Paul Gruppé
Early 20th Century

Gruppé studied painting in Europe, yet he resided mainly in Rochester, New York until the 1920s. An exhibit of Frederick Mulhaupt's harbor scenes and a trip to Massachusetts inspired a major life change. Gruppé moved to the Cape Ann area and spent the rest of his life painting landscapes. The artist is known for his studies of sunlight breaking through clouds and reflecting on the water.
