Eugène Louis Gabriel Isabey
1825 – 1835

French painter Isabey was best known for his seascapes. Isabey was a favorite of the French court, and King Louis-Philippe I appointed him to document an expedition to Algeria. This seascape was purchased by Henry W. Longfellow at an auction on April 26, 1844. He recorded the event in his journal, writing, "Bought at auction a beautiful sea piece of Isabey the younger, of which the catalogue says - 'Nothing can be finer than the freedom & transparency of this picture.'"
