Chapman spent his childhood summers in his uncle's shipyard in Maine. He studied at the Art Student's League and at the National Academy in New York, as well as in Paris and London. The U.S. Naval Academy commissioned Chapman to paint images of naval engagements of the War of 1812. Harper's Magazine also commissioned the artist to illustrate scenes of the Spanish American War.
