Foster was a successful illustrator and watercolor painter from England. He was known for illustrating several books of poetry by contemporary artists, including Longfellow's Evangeline. This view of the lakeside village of St. Gilgen is mentioned in the Longfellow poem, "Hyperion." Foster sent the painting to Longfellow in 1853, writing "My dear Sir, May I beg your acceptance of a small drawing of St. Gilgen, which I have had much pleasure in making for you ... ."
