Thomas Hart Benton
1940 – 1950

Thomas Hart Benton and Harry Truman became good friends while Benton was painting the mural "Independence and the Opening of the West" at the Truman Presidential Library from 1960 to 1961. The artist presented the Trumans with this small landscape for Christmas in 1962. Bess Truman insisted on hanging it in the living room, where it remains today.
