Sexton was born in Hilo, Hawai'i. The artist trained in Boston and London before returning to Hawai'i, where he became known for his paintings of island subjects, especially flowers, figures, and landscapes. This view depicts the Kilauea Caldera with a native 'ohi'a tree and its lehua blossoms in the foreground.
