Mary Muir Hand
ca. 1897

Mary Muir was born in Scotland and came with her family to the United States as a three year old. She was close to her older brother, John, the well-known naturalist, conservationist, founder of the Sierra Club, and proponent of national parks. John invited his talented sister to California in 1897, stating, "the fares will be low, you will thus have one trip in your hard self denying life." This depiction of Yosemite may have been painted during her visit.
