Thomas Moran
1871

Thomas Moran's luminous watercolor and pencil field sketches and oil paintings captured the majesty of the extraordinary terrain and natural features of the Yellowstone region. His artwork was presented to members of Congress by park proponents. These images of Yellowstone fired the imagination and helped inspire Congress to establish Yellowstone National Park, and subsequently, the National Park Service in 1916.
