Jackson was part of the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871, led by geologist Ferdinand Hayden, that explored the Yellowstone region. He is best known as the first person to photograph the wonders of Yellowstone. Jackson's images of the American West adorned many American households. His photographs, together with Thomas Moran's paintings, were instrumental in the establishment of Yellowstone National Park, America's first national park in 1872.
