Hubert Buel
1949

Born and raised in California, Hubert Buel was an accomplished illustrator and watercolorist. He served in the Navy during World War II, painting the South Pacific landscapes where he was stationed. After the war, Buel worked as an illustrator for the San Francisco Chronicle. This view of San Francisco's Muncipical Pier is the early design concept for "Project X," a proposed maritime and transportation museum at Aquatic Park. Project X became the San Francisco Maritime State Historic Park, which later became a national park.
