Benjamin Willard Sears
ca. 1880s

Born in Connecticut, Sears grew up in California. Originally a photographer, Sears switched to painting in the 1870s. He was hired as a sketch artist for the U.S. Signal Coast Survey. He moved from marine subject matter to landscapes, in particular, those of the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite.
