During the mid-19th century, the Ridgely family frequently traveled to cooler climes during the summer, especially favoring resorts such as Bedford Springs, Pennsylvania or Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1864, Eliza "Didy" Ridgely White (1828-1894) took her extended family to Newport, Rhode Island for the summer, where they stayed at the Bruen Villa on Bellevue Avenue. The house was a relatively modern stone structure in the Gothic Revival style with large porches to catch the breezes off the ocean.
