View of South Façade of Hampton
1838
By Robert Carey Long, Jr.
Prominent Baltimore architect Robert Carey Long, Jr. painted this view of the mansion at the time John and Eliza Ridgely were making numerous improvements to the gardens and grounds. The small Greek Revival structure on the left is the Orangery, a specialized green house for citrus fruit trees. Only a handful of trees and other plantings are visible on the Great Terrace. Comparison to a map drawn less than five years later by surveyor Joshua Barney, indicates there were many more trees just south of the mansion. Perhaps Long took a bit of artistic license in order to show the house more clearly.
