Helen Pitts Douglass was Frederick Douglass' second wife. She was from Honeoye, New York. Her parents, Gideon and Jane Wells Pitts were both abolitionists. Helen's ancestors can be tracked to the Mayflower. She attended Mt. Holyoke Seminary in Massachusetts. She was an activist in the women's rights movement and collaborated with Caroline Winslow in publishing a feminist newspaper, The Alpha.
