Dining Room

Daily meals, family gatherings and dinners with guests were all held in the dining room. It is the largest room of the home. Douglass was known to be an animated storyteller. He sat at the head of the table on a chair with wheels. They allowed him to easily push himself back from the table to dramatize parts of stories he was telling.

Anna Murray Douglass was known to be a good cook and was famous for her biscuits. Since Douglass did not drink wine or other alcohol, Anna served cocoa, tea and coffee at the table. Main dishes included oysters, turkey, fish, cheese, chipped beef, steak, mutton and pork.
