Helen's Pitts Douglass Bedroom Helen was from a family of abolitionists. She met Frederick Douglass when she was a young girl and he was visiting her father. Helen moved to Uniontown in 1880 to live with her uncle who lived near Cedar Hill. Frederick married Helen, seventeen months after Anna’s passing. There was a 20-year difference in their ages. But it was the interracial nature of their marriage that was extremely controversial at the time. In Helen’s room you can see her sewing machine, sewing table and Remington typewriter. Helen founded the Frederick Douglass Memorial and Historical Association to preserve Cedar Hill and Frederick Douglass’ legacy.
