Panamint Swallowtail
[top]
Papilio indra panamintensis
1996

This display box contains pinned specimens of the Panamint Swallowtail. These butterflies were illegally collected and then confiscated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The specimens were returned to Death Valley National Park and now remain in Death Valley’s collection.

In 1995, the US Fish and Wildlife Service discovered large-scale poaching operations within Death Valley and other U.S. national parks and wildlife refuges. This eventually led to the prosecution of three men for illegally capturing thousands of butterflies. Of the species captured, 14 were protected under the Endangered Species Act.
