Willcox & Gibbs sewing machines are unique in that they do not have a bobbin. It sews using a single thread chain stitch instead of the better known lock stitch using two threads. Willcox & Gibbs sewing machines were the best of the single thread or chainstitch machines available. The designer, Allen Gibb, made sure his machine was instantly recognizable when it is turned around and the outline of the machine makes a perfect "G."

This machine the Scotty's Castle collection is somewhat unusual due to the hand wheel that was popular in Great Britain. There are patent numbers from the USA and Great Britain on this machine. The latest patent date is from 1894, making it one of the later machines with automatic tension and stitch length guide. Mrs. Johnson did not need to sew her clothing. She had a personal dress maker and bought many of her garments from the best stores. According to one interview, she did repair the booties that visitors wore to protect the Majorcan rugs in the Castle. She may have used the machine to repair the booties.
