Scotty's Iconic Hat and Tie
"He dresses the same way, summer and winter - a dark blue suit without a vest, a white shirt, a big tan sombrero hat, and a flmaing red necktie." Bessie Johnson
Campaign Hat
Made by Stetson
Scotty was a publicity hound who had learned a few things from "Buffalo Bill" Cody. One was to have a "trademark" that allowed the public to readily identify him. Scotty adopted the "Boss of the Plains" hat as part of his trademark.
The classic "cowboy" hat was widely worn in the West. This style of Stetson has four inch flat brim and a four inch tall rounded crown. This hat could last for many years, keeping sun and rain off the owner's face. The owner chose how to wear the crown, rounded, indented or with a center fold. Scotty always put three indentations into the crown of his Stetson, making a peak in the middle. He had several Stetsons.

Necktie
Probably the most famous part of Scotty's regular outfit was his red tie. Although his hat was more visible, many had the opportunity to earn a genuine Death Valley Scotty tie. Scotty liked to give away his ties to people whom he liked, probably the good listeners. Usually women or children earned a tie, possibly because men already had their own and wouldn't place the same value on Scotty's gift. This tie has an inside tag with "Death Valley Scotty" and is rather frayed and worn, obviously one that Scotty used for a while.
