Edwin and Edward Baltzley invented a new and improved egg beater. They used the proceeds from sales of the eggbeater to build a large real estate development and establish a National Chautauqua, a nationally recognized educational center to be a part of the Chautauqua movement. In 1888 they purchased 516 acres and named their property Glen Echo on the Potomac. They gave Ms. Barton land and built her a house in Glen Echo that she used first as a Red Cross warehouse and in her later years a home.
