Painting of the Iron Cross of Germany

Kaiser Wilhelm I and Empress Augusta presented Miss Barton with the Iron Cross of Merit in 1873 for her contributions  during the Franco Prussia War relief efforts.  Barton was the first woman to receive this recognition. This medal was never before or after awarded to an American woman.
