Miss Barton received this small painting as a gift from the Grand Duchess, Louise of Baden. Hand-written in brown ink around painting is the inscription, "Facsimile of Gold Brooch - emblematic of the “Red Cross." a gift to Miss Clara Barton, From her Royal highness, the Grand duchess of Baden, only daughter of the Emperor of Germany."
