Glimpse of Fifty Years: The Autobiography of an American Woman

The author devoted her life to the women’s organization that worked to prohibit alcoholic beverages.  She was also active in other causes, in particular, women’s suffrage. She inscribed this book with a dedication that reads, "Clara Barton, The story of one whose pure and active life honored her sex and benefited the world."

A Synopsis of the Butchery of the Late Sir Washington Irving Bishop

The story concerns Washington Irving Bishop, a mentalist who was subject to fits of catalepsy during which his body became rigid and his breathing seemed to stop. He collapsed after a strenuous New York performance and a doctor and a shoemaker did an autopsy on him.  The author, the subject’s mother, believed her son had been cut up while still alive, murdered by the doctor's curiosity about his brain.  The author inscribed the following words, “To my beloved friend Miss Clara Barton with love the Author, December 25, 1890.”

Adjutant Stearns

The author published this book in memory of his son. Frazer Augustus Stearns, Massachusetts soldier died in the Battle of New Bern during the Civil War.  Clara Barton was also from Massachusetts, considered the soldiers “my boys”.  Her great affection for “her boys” was one of the reasoned that she was compelled to help on the battlefields.

The subject, Henry Ward Camp Major, U.S. Army, 10th Regiment, Connecticut Volunteer Infantry was captured on July 19, 1863, near Morris Island, South Carolina. He was confined to the Richland Jail in South Carolina.  The book is inscribed, “Miss Clara Barton with regards of E.D.S.”

The Rev. Barton, (1861-1930) was one of the early 2oth century's prominent writers and lecturers on Abraham Lincoln.  He inscribed the text with,  “To my cousin Clara Barton this advance copy of my book is given with the love of the author.”
