The photograph in the center of the page is of “Sister Bettina (Mrs. A. M. Lesser)”
Dr. A. Monae Lesser, a surgeon, and his wife, Bettina Lesser, a trained nurse, were on the American Red Cross staff during the Spanish-American War.  Mrs. Lesser went by the name “Sister Bettina”, while working with the wounded in Cuba.  Dr. Lesser’s report on the Cuban relief work is included in Clara Barton’s publication, “The Red Cross in Peace and War.”
They were working in Siboney during June and July of 1898 when they were both sickened by an outbreak of Yellow Fever and had to leave the field work in order to recover.
