Sandburg’s poetry was meant to be heard with its cadences and rhythms; thousands of Americans tuned in to hear Sandburg on shows over the airwaves. Fred Friendly, a CBS co-producer with Edward R. Murrow said of Sandburg, “He was a folksinger in motion, a poet, an historian, a lover of America. Like his resonant voice, his life and work resonated with the American experience.” (Niven, p 633)
