Sandburg’s daughter Helga lived at Connemara with her two young children, Paula (left) and John Carl (right) from 1945 to 1952.  John Carl and Paula had an adventurous life at Connemara. Much of their formative years were spent exploring the hills and forests, listening to stories and songs told by their grandfather, Buppong, and developing their own imaginations and independent spirits.  (John Carl’s first attempts to say grandpa turned into Buppong, and that is how he and his sister always referred to their grandfather).
