Sandburg used his art for change. In his poem Prayers of Steel he says: “Let me pry loose old walls, Let me lift and loosen old foundations.” He fought for social change and in his lifetime saw the establishment of an 8-hour workday, protection for child laborers, unemployment and worker’s compensation laws and laws protecting civil rights.
